Photo I chose
Analysis:
Lighting: The direction of the lighting (as seen in the photo) is coming from the light source in the upper left corner of the picture, I can tell because i can seen the light source directly in the picture. The quality of this lighting is very direct in one sport and includes very harsh shadows covering the subject. The lighting in this picture is artificial since it is coming from the roof of the location Jonathon(the subject) is in.
Expression: The expression the subject is giving off is a serious one. This gives the viewer a sense of mystery about the subject and sets a very low mood.
Background: I think this picture was taken on location. Though you cannot see the background very well judging by the ceiling in the image, this was not taken in a studio but in a more so organic building. There is really no relation to the location and the subject besides it being a cool backdrop.
Pose and posture: The pose the subject is making in this picture is a more natural one. Judging by thr way he slightly tilts his head and looks more relaxed than stiff. This is a medium shot which is cropped off at mid torso. The subject is positioned in an open space, but since it is barely visible it gives a more closed off feeling.
Eyes and direction of gaze: Though Jonathon's eyes are submerged in shadow they seem to stand out in the darkness. Jonathon's gaze is focused at the camera lens which makes it seem as though he is looking right at you yourself. This shows that the subject is very confident and serious.
Colour and contrast: There is no colour in this picture, it is purely greyscale. The contrast between the light and shadow is very harsh, there is little mid tones but mostly a harsher light or a very bold darkness.
What do I like about this photo?: I like everything about this photo. I know this is a very vague statement but it is true. I like the serious and confident mood this picture gives off. I like how the shadows are placed to only reveal the important parts, and I love the person who's in it (check out EDENs music he's absolutely amazing) when I see this picture I am reminded of the beautiful music He has made and it makes me happy knowing this beautiful human exists.

Digital self portrait
Self portrait assignment
For this piece I chose the art style "post impressionism" mostly in Van Goghs style of art.
The artistic choices I made to create this style was using the "broken colour technique" which is what most impressionists artists use to create texture and colour within their pieces. I used short very textured brush strokes to create a layered effect and used a brighter colour scale.
To create this piece I first got a friend to take a couple of pictures of myself using a butterfly lighting style- which is most flattering for taking portraits. Once we took an unnecessary amount of pictures I sifted through them and choose the one I thought was the most flattering. I then put the photo in photo shop and started playing around with my colours and brushes. It took me a while to start getting into the hang of things but I soon decided on a textured brush to be the main star of my piece. I created a layer over top of my portrait and started by colouring in the face, then another layer for the hair, another for the eyes and the clothes and so on. Once everything was a solid colour closest to the original portrait I created lighter or darker versions of the original colours and then made quick short brushstrokes across the solid colours to get the broken effect. Once I was satisfied I added a gradient background and cropped the picture down to as square as possible.
In the end I wasn't every satisfied with how my portrait turned out, my friends say I look sort of "burnt" I whish I could have made some of the colours a little more subtle and had kept some more "humanly" aspects within the portrait.

Still Life Drawing
For this assignment we were to draw a one part of a "still life" this is the portion I chose. The process of this piece took about two weeks. I started with drawing 4 different sections of our still life then after adding value to one of them, I decided that this section was my favourite to draw and also the best one I could see. Once I was confident on the position of everything I procrastinated on ruining my beautiful piece of new white paper. once I gained the confidence to proceed I started lightly drawing in guidelines with my HB pencil. When I was happy with my lines I started defining them and drawing in little details. (like on the bunnies face or the little hole in the skull). When that was completed I took my HB pencil and started shading into the most visible dark areas. When that was done I went over it again just adding a slight bit of more pressure to my pencil. When I was happy with my shadows I went over the darker areas with my 2B pencil and then went over the darkest areas with my 6B pencil. once I was happy with how everything looked, I cleaned up the edges with my kneed-able eraser and then photographed it.
The composition I chose initially for this piece was an L shape but as I worked I had run into the problem that my composition had no longer looked like an L. To fix that I had defined the ruffles on the curtains beside the bunny. The reason I believe this is composed in an L shape is because the curtains on the left draw your eyes from the top corner down to where the bunny sits, the bunny, followed by the skull and then the ledge draw your eyes to the right side making a full L. The L is kind of subtle but it brings all of the components together.
